Our Mission
Since purchasing the property that would become The Rainforest Inn, we have had many goals and aspirations: to give travelers a unique glimpse of Puerto Rico in a sustainable setting, to offer a peaceful retreat from busy everyday life, and to make our guests feel at home in an exotic place.
Above all else, however, we strive for one simple thing:
To share the experience of this awe inspiring setting with all who wish to enjoy it.
Our frangipani plant in bloom, visible just beyond the villa porch steps (top right).
While our guests often describe our vegetarian breakfasts as delicious and our accommodations as spacious, the true hallmark of The Rainforest Inn is the nature that surrounds it.
From the peaceful, almost Zen-like calm of our koi pond to the carefully tended grounds; from the towering agave plants to the breadfruit, starfruit, and banana trees; and from the views along the Lost Machete Trail to the sweeping Caribbean vistas just below our villa, everything here is designed to bring our guests closer to nature and nature closer to our guests.
If our first aim is to make a stay at our bed and breakfast an experience of nature, it follows naturally that
we are committed to sustainability and the ongoing stewardship of El Yunque
we have taken almost every conceivable step to make the Rainforest Inn a place that places as little burden on the earth as possible.
All of our lighting uses warm LED bulbs, and we have chosen not to install air conditioning in order to keep energy use low. Don’t worry, though—high ceilings, fans, and the cool mountain breezes keep things comfortable here.
We conserve water by collecting the rainfall that El Yunque provides and storing it in our numerous cisterns. All food waste is composted and used to nourish the gardens throughout the property. We also avoid pesticides entirely, relying instead on the friendly bats and anoles of the rainforest to help keep mosquitoes under control.
Looking ahead, we are planning several exciting eco friendly projects, including a large aquaponics greenhouse to expand our local food production, with harvests to be shared with our guests, as well as an off the grid solar installation.
